Fence Maintenance for Every Type of Fence out There

All fences need to be maintained. Depending on the type of fence and the fence material, there is a unique set of maintenance requirements. If you haven’t done anything to maintain your fence since it was installed, now is the time to learn.

Maintaining Wood

Wood fences need to be sealed, stained, or painted. If your fence installer did not, at the very least, seal the fence, you will need to do that to protect the fence against rot. You can take it a step further if you want and stain the entire fence or paint it using an outdoor waterproof paint.

Maintaining Vinyl/PVC

Vinyl or PVC fences need to be washed regularly. A low power pressure wash and a gentle cleanser can clean your entire PVC fence. When the fence is white, you definitely need to clean it and clean it a little more often. Additionally, these types of fences occasionally need the posts and partitions adjusted to prevent them from coming apart. Strong winds and objects hitting the panels can knock them a little loose. Checking panels and posts to make sure things are secure and aligned is sound maintenance.

Maintaining Wrought Iron

Wrought iron fences are very elegant, but they probably need the most care of all. These fences can rust over time, so they need to be sprayed with black metal outdoor paint and an antirust treatment once a year. When there is significant rust already, it has to be sanded off and the metal restored.

Sections of fence where vines or other growing things have become enmeshed around the wrought iron need to be cleared of the organic materials. The more greenery is wrapped in, around, and through the fence, the more bent and misshapen these sections can become. Removing the greenery and keeping the fence clear prevents the bigger expense of replacing fence sections later.
